Definition: Genome projects are scientific undertakings for which the goal is to sequence the entirety of the DNA sequence (genome) of an organism. The Human Genome Project was an attempt to sequence the human genome in order to gain a better understanding of the purpose of each gene. The sequencing of the human genome was completed in 2003.
