9. The birth of Jesus

  1. Birth of Jesus

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. Joseph and Mary went from Nazareth to Bethlehem, walking 125 kilometres. While they were there, Mary gave birth to Jesus and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

“In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”(Lc 2,10-12). Then they went and adored Jesus, giving Him presents.

  2. The Three Wise Men

By the times of the king Herod three wise men from the East arrive to Jerusalem asking: ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”(Mt 2, 2). A star was guiding them, showing were the child was.

They entered in the house, found the baby and Mary and adored them. They offered gold, incense and myrrh. Later, these three wise men, called Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, returned to their kingdoms without saying Herod a word about were the baby was.

Herod, fearing Jesus could steal his crown, he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under. That day is called the Holy Innocents' day. But the Virgin and Saint Joseph were saved by the warning of an angel and escaped to Egypt.
