18. The Commandments

  1. The Ten Commandments

    In the gospel we can read about a young man who approached Jesus and asked him: ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?’And he said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ (Mt 19, 16-17) This is the way Jesus has to teach us the way to Heaven. Those who obey the commandments and his will are saved; those who don't, condemned themshelves.

   God revealed Moses the ten commandments in the mount Sinai, and carved them in two stone slabs, because they mustn't be forgotten. In the slabs was written:

   1º.  You shall not have other gods besides me.
   2º. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
   3º. Remember to keep holy the Lord's day.
   4º. Honor your father and your mother.
   5º. You shall not kill.
   6º. You shall not commit adultery.
   7º. You shall not steal.
   8º. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
   9º. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
   10º. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.

   These ten commandments are summarized in two: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.'

  2. The new commandment

   Jesus teached us: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’ (Jn 13, 34-35). We must love the other as Jesus teach us, because He offered his life for our redemption. We must love each other with our thoughts and our acts.

   The Law of God is summarized in only one word: love. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’(Mt 22, 37-40). Those who truly love God also love his kin, because they are his brothers, sons of a same Father and reedemed by the blood of Christ.

   We must obbey the Law of God and Holy Church's commandments.
