30. Conditions for a correct confession

  1. Conditions for a good confession

    To make a good confession five things are needed:

   - Examination of conscience: to remember the sins commited since our last confession and telling them to the priest who is confessing us.

   - Sorrow for sins: to be sad in our souls for offending God and ask forgiveness.

   - Purpose of amendment: to be confident of not commit these sins again.

   - To tell about our sins to our confessor: telling to the priest, in a clear way, the sins remembered during the exam.

   - To fulfill a penance: doing what the priest ordered us, like a prayer, a sacrifize, an alms...

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

   It consists on remember mortal and venial sins comitted since our last confession. We can think in the Ten commandments, the Law of the Church, our duties in study and work or the obligations of our society. In regarding mortal sins, we must say their number and circumstances.

  2. SORROW FOR THE SINS

    The sorrow for the sins is a feeling or supernatural pain for offending God. It could be of two types:

   - Pain of contrition or perfect pain is the sorrow for offended God, because He is infinite goodness, worthy of being loved over the rest of things. This pain must be accompanied by the purpose of not commit the pain again. The pain of contrition will forgive sins if we have the purpose of confess them.

   - Pain of atrition is the sorrow for offend God, originated in the fear of punishment or in the same uglyness of the sin. The pain of atrition is not enough to forgive our sins, so it is necessary to confess and receive the absolution by a priest.

PURPOSE OF AMENDMENT

   It consists on the determination of doesn’t commit sin again, as Jesus told to the public woman: "Go, and sin no more” (John 8,11). We must be dispossed to don’t do it again and avoid all the times when we can commit sin, as bad companies, dangerous lectures, disgusting conversations, etc.

  3. TO TELL OUR SINS TO OUR CONFESSOR

    We must tell all our mortal and venial sins to our confessor. We must tell about them with humility and simplicity, explaining our sins, even if we are not sure of them, and the circumstances when we commited them. If we do not tell something voluntarily or keep some mortal sins for us, it would be a serious sin, a sacrilege, and the pardon has no effect. But if we forget to tell a sin to his confessor and tell it lately, that sin is forgiven.

FULFILL THE PENANCE

   It means to do what the priest orders us, like pray, make a sacrifice, give alms or other acts.

   It is done to satisfy our debt with God by sin. It is better to fulfill our penance as soon as possible. If the penance is not fulfilled, the confession is still valid, but that breach could be more or less serious, according to the sin confessed.
