Make a Difference in Global Health

Jemma Alarcon during Zika response“This experience reinforced the need to think about health as interconnected in every day patient care. Physicians must be aware of emerging diseases in order to provide the best care, regardless of where the patient is from. I will try to stay informed of emerging diseases, new therapies and ways to prevent transmission while treating my patients. I will also look for more opportunities to contribute to global health locally and abroad. I think my ability to review patient’s charts has greatly improved and I will be using this skill in every day practice.”

Expand Cultural Awareness

Noelle Benzekri working in the Republic of Congo“I learned a lot about research design and the multiple players to consider when designing a research protocol, as well as considerations for protocol implementation, capacity-building and sustainability. I hope to do a global health research project during residency and continue working in global health capacity-building beyond residency, so my experience in Uganda will be invaluable in influencing my success with future global health projects in Africa or other developing nations.”

Think Global, Act Local

Rachel Blake working in the field“In my future career, I plan to continually keep in mind the public health implications of the day-to-day interactions I have with patients and other physicians. This fellowship helped give me a broader picture view of maternal and child healthcare, and introduced me to the important concept of event reporting for maternal and perinatal mortality. I plan to apply these principles in my future clinical career and also plan to be a physician who is very much engaged in public health work.”

Embrace a Future in Global Health

Fellow Maria Evola testing a pig"The knowledge I’ve gained has not only made me a more well-rounded professional, but it also can apply to my daily life in the clinic. I’m not sure what lies ahead for me at this stage, but my experience in Thailand and with the CDC has helped unveil additional opportunities in veterinary public health, a field that I am destined for at some point in my career.”

Work with Experts

Janet Beagley taking blood sample“The CDC-Hubert Fellowship gave me the opportunity to work side-by-side with local professionals in the national offices and health facilities all over the country. We established shared goals, good working relationships, and ultimately friendships, in a truly mutually beneficial partnership. As a technical advisor, I was able to provide perspectives and teach certain skills, and as professionals and citizens, they were able to provide perspectives and teach me to adapt my skills in such a context. I know that I have grown immensely as a professional from this experience and I hope that I have helped others to grow as well.”

Develop a Global Health Perspective

Huberts Fellow Nikki Wright pictured with four men“My CDC Hubert Fellowship experience has, and will continue to, profoundly affect my career and life. I have already used some of the skills and knowledge that I gained including language skills, organizational skills, and strategies for epidemiological analysis. I am certain that this experience has influenced how I view the world, public health, and the CDC. I will continue to share the lessons that I have learned with my peers and mentees, and seek out new mentors and experiences that will allow me explore and impact global public health.”
