Laryngeal perichondritis
Other names: Perichondritis of the larynx
SymptomsThroat pain, trouble swallowing[1]
FrequencyUncommon[2]

Laryngeal perichondritis is inflammation of the tissue around the cartalage of the voice box.[2] Symptoms may include pain to the throat, bad breath, hoarseness, and trouble swallowing.[1][3] Complications may include injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve or blockage of the airway.[2][3]

Risk factors include radiation therapy to the area, intubation, or direct injury.[2] Other causes may include syphilis, tuberculosis, or cancer.[4][5] The underlying mechanism involves inflammation or infection followed by breakdown of the laryngeal cartilage.[3]

Treatment may involved airway management, antibiotics, or surgery to drain any collections of pus.[3][5] In some cases complete removal of the larynx is required.[6] Laryngeal perichondritis is uncommon.[2]
