The ugly duckling sign is a medical sign used in dermatology to identify a potential skin cancer by looking for an odd looking spot; one that is different to others in the same individual.[1][2]
It was based on the observation that most moles on a person are somewhat similar, so that should one appear out of place, melanoma may be suspected.[3][4]
It was introduced by J. J. Grob and J. J. Bonerandi in 1998.[5]
