1. FC Nürnberg, Hannover 96 and 1. FC Saarbrücken were promoted to the Bundesliga while FC St. Pauli, VfR 1910 Bürstadt, Kickers Offenbach and SSV Ulm 1846 were relegated to the Oberliga.
