On 13 August 2023, a landslide killed at least 33 miners at a jade mine in Hpakant, Myannmar.[1]

Background

Hpakant is a town in Hpakant Township in Kachin State, northern Myanmar.[1] It is the centre of the world's jade mining. Many independent miners and scavengers operate there, many of whom are from other parts of Myanmar.[1] Landslides occur there several times a year, killing many of them.[1] Jade mining disasters occurred in November 2015, April 2019, July 2019, July 2020 and December 2021.

Disaster

On 13 August 2023, a landslide occurred in Hpakant, causing earth, debris and over 35 miners from several mines to fall about 300 metres down a cliff into a lake.[1] About 150 rescuers using five small boats recovered the bodies of 33 men from a lake.[1]
