Arran (ward)

Arran is one of the nine wards used to elect members of the North Ayrshire council. It consists of the Isle of Arran.

Location of the ward (pre-2022 boundaries) in North Ayrshire[1]

A ward named Arran had existed from the establishment of the North Ayrshire council in 1996 until 2007, when a new system of proportional representation was introduced which required each ward to elect at least three councillors. As the Isle of Arran did not have sufficient population to remain a ward in its own right, it was merged into the new Ardrossan and Arran ward. In 2018, the Islands (Scotland) Act was passed, which once again allowed single-member wards to represent islands. Thus, since the 2022 election, Arran and Ardrossan have been separate wards.
