Bae Jun-ho

Bae Jun-ho (Korean: 배준호; born 21 August 2003) is a South Korean professional footballer who currently plays as an attacking midfielder or left winger for EFL Championship club Stoke City.

Club career

Daejeon Hana Citizen

Bae started his career in the academy of Daegu, before attending the Daegu Banyawol Elementary School, Daeryun Middle School and Cheonan Jeil High School.[2] While in high school, he was ranked as the country's number one prospect.[3] He spent one season in the under-18 squad of Pyeongtaek Jinwi.[2]

In January 2022, following interest from a number of clubs across Europe, as well as former club Daegu, he signed for K League 2 side Daejeon Hana Citizen.[3] In his first season with the club, he scored one goal in eight K League 2 appearances, before appearing twice in the promotion playoffs, as Daejeon achieved promotion to the K League 1. He also appeared for the club's reserve team in the K4 League.[4] For the 2023 season, Bae received more playing time, as he continued his integration into the squad from the youth team.[5]

On 27 August 2023, Daejeon officially announced that they had reached an agreement with EFL Championship side Stoke City for the transfer of Bae on a permanent deal.[6][7]

Stoke City

On 31 August 2023, Bae joined Stoke City for an undisclosed fee on a four-year contract.[8]

International career

Having represented South Korea at under-19 level in a number of friendlies, Bae was called up to the under-20 squad for qualification to the 2023 AFC U-20 Asian Cup.[9] Having scored in two qualification games against Mongolia and Malaysia, he was called up to the tournament proper, where he scored one goal as South Korea were knocked out in the semi-final by Uzbekistan.[9] Despite South Korea's failure to win the tournament, Bae was still praised for his performances.[10]

He was again called up to the under-20 squad for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Before the start of the tournament, Bae and roommate Lee Young-jun promised to score at least six goals between them.[11] Despite a slow start to the tournament, in the round of 16 match against Ecuador, he scored once and got an assist for Lee's goal in a 3–2 victory, receiving numerous plaudits from various Korean media outlets.[12][13]

Style of play

An attacking midfielder who is comfortable using both feet, Bae has been regarded for his passing range and dribbling, as well as his balance and stamina.[3] He has cited fellow South Korean Hwang In-beom, as well as Kevin De Bruyne, as his biggest footballing role-models.[4]
