Barczewko

Barczewko [barˈt͡ʂɛfkɔ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Barczewo, within Olsztyn County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in northern Poland.[1] It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) west of Barczewo and 10 km (6 mi) north-east of the regional capital Olsztyn. It is situated on the northern shore of Lake Wadąg in the historic region of Warmia.

History

The village grew around a fortification founded by vogt Friedrich von Liebenzelle. The village is mentioned in written sources for the first time on 26 December 1329. In the winter of 1353-54 the village was destroyed by Lithuanian troops. It was later rebuilt but further to the east of the original location. The village church dates from 1582.[2] It formed part of the Kingdom of Poland until it was annexed by Prussia in the First Partition of Poland in 1772. In the late 19th century, it had a population of 650, solely Polish by nationality.[3] In 1920, the Germans attacked and disrupted Polish rallies held in the village.[4][5]
