Darko Ilić

Darko Ilić (Serbian Cyrillic: Дарко Илић; born 1 January 2004) is a German professional footballer who plays as a full-back for Whitecaps FC 2 of MLS Next Pro.

Early life

Ilić was born on New Year's Day 2004, with him being raised in the Haspe borough of Hagen. He joined the Borussia Dortmund academy when he was 12, with him soon joining Hombrucher SV at 13, Rot-Weiss Essen at 14, and Fortuna Düsseldorf at 16.[1] He made 33 appearances for Fortuna Düsseldorf at youth level.[2]

Club career

Fortuna Düsseldorf II

Ilić was on the bench in a Regionalliga match for Fortuna Düsseldorf II versus 1. FC Düren in 15 October 2022.[3][4] He was on the bench four more times throughout the season, with his last stint on the bench coming in a goalless draw versus 1. FC Köln II on 18 February 2023.[3][5]

Whitecaps FC 2

On 26 May 2023, Whitecaps FC 2 announced the signing of Ilić, with his contract running through 2024.[2] He made his professional debut for Whitecaps FC 2 in a fixture against Austin FC II on 10 June 2023, starting for 54 minutes, with the game finishing 1–0 to Austin FC II.[6][7] Ilić scored his first professional goal in a game versus Colorado Rapids 2, playing all 90 minutes, in a 6–2 loss on 6 August 2023 in the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.[8][9][10]

International career

Ilić is eligible to play for Germany, through birth, and Serbia, through ancestry.[1]
