Derrick Simmons

Derrick Terrell Simmons (born December 12, 1976) is an American politician and trial lawyer, currently serving as a Democratic member of the Mississippi Senate, since 2011.

In 2013, Simmons proposed a legislative amendment that would expand Medicaid; the amendment was defeated.[1]

In January 2022, Simmons led the walking out of all 14 black Mississippi senators, during a vote to ban the critical race theory from being taught in the state’s public schools, colleges, and universities.[2][3][4]

Early life and education

His twin brother Erick Simmons is the mayor of Greenville, Mississippi. Derrick was valedictorian of their high school.[5]

In addition to his legislative duties, Simmons is a trial lawyer. He has an MBA and a JD from Howard University.[6][7]
