All tracks were written, performed and recorded by Neil Cicierega. The album received generally positive reception and was largely successful, with the track "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny" being Lemon Demon's most played song on Spotify for a decade with over 45 million streams as of May 2023.

History

Shortly after the release of Lemon Demon's 2005 album Damn Skippy, Cicierega began releasing singles for Dinosaurchestra. Just a month later in April 2005, the songs "Fine" and "Samuel and Rosella" were made available as an mp3 download on lemondemon.com.[5] Throughout the year, more singles were released, including "Action Movie Hero Boy" (May 2005),[6] "Vow of Silence" (June 2005),[7] "Lawnmower" (August 2005),[8] "Stick Stickly" (November 2005),[9] and "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny" (December 2005).[10] Additionally, several bonus tracks were released in 2006.[11][12]

The album was released digitally and on CD on July 20, 2006, followed by a remastered physical release on vinyl, CD, and cassette in January 2022 by Needlejuice Records,[4] followed by a minidisc release in November 2022.[13] A wax cylinder single was released for the bonus track "The Oldest Man on MySpace" in May 2023.[14]

Reception

The Boston Globe compliments Cicierega's creativity on the album, saying his "quirky songwriting style is reminiscent of They Might Be Giants".[15] The Bandcamp Daily says the tracks are "consistently engaging" and "range from rocking hook factories to goofy IDM to fizzy new wave".[1] Toronto Star talks about the album selling enough CDs that it's able to financially support Cicierega as a career. [16]

Dayton Daily News and Salon praise the music video of "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny", saying it's "the latest hot thing" and "if the catchy chorus is running through your head, don't say we didn't warn you".[17][18] Dr. Demento called it the "#1 song of 2006 thus far".[19]
