The owner of Grand Hôtel Terrasse received a concession by the Swiss Federal Assembly in 1905. It had an initial duration of 80 years.[4][5] It opened on 30 August 1905 (1905-08-30).[1][2]

The service was suspended in 1941,[1] and from 1993[6] to 1998.[3]

The funicular was finally closed in 2008, when the concession expired and the installations would have required investment for renewal.[3] Elevators and tunnels replaced it.[3][7][8]
