Its two functions made it the center of community life at the turn of the twentieth century. The building was used mostly as a Presbyterian and Congregational church but also as a school, while a Latter-day Saints congregation later used it.[2]

No other churches or schools were constructed in Echo at any point in its history,[2]:6 although the Echo School is slightly more than 2.2 miles (3.5 km) away.[3][4]
