Fictional character biography

In season one, Eddie is a police detective transferred from Keystone City to Central City Police Department (CCPD).[1][2] Eddie has been dating Iris while working with Joe West who nicknamed him "Detective Pretty Boy".[3][4][5][6] Eddie and Barry gradually end up as good friends, as he teaches Barry how to box which helps in order to be a capable combatant (in addition to Oliver Queen's training) and the two assists each other in various investigations.[7][8][9][10][11] Eddie learns about Eobard Thawne, getting disillusioned from the near-death encounters.[12][13][14][15] However, he realizes the future is not set and sacrifices himself to seemingly erase his descendant from existence to save his loved ones (including Barry and Iris); his body is sucked into a wormhole.[16]

In subsequent seasons, Eddie can be seen through time travel and hallucinations, while his likeness has been used by cosmic forces.[17][18][19][20][21]

In season nine, Eddie is resurrected as "Dr. Malcolm Gilmore" of Mercury Labs by the Negative Speed Force which manipulated him into believing he lost a chance with Iris and a family, turning himself into the speedster Cobalt Blue until he resists the corrupting influence and agrees to co-exist with Barry.[22][23][24][25]

Development

Rick Cosnett portrayed Eddie Thawne.

Executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, and DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns, created Eddie Thawne for the CW series The Flash with Rick Cosnett cast as the character.[26][27] He is an original character,[28] but he seems to be an amalgamation of Eobard Thawne due to his name and appearance (which ultimately turned to be a red herring) and Hunter Zolomon due to being a police detective,[29][30] as well as Cobalt Blue.[31]
