Initially, a Palestine Liberation Organization office was opened in Tokyo in 1977. PLO temporarily closed it in 1995, but the State of Palestine re-opened its diplomatic mission as the Permanent General Mission of Palestine in Tokyo in 2003.[2]

Status of head of mission

This mission does not have embassy status as Japan does not recognize Palestine as a sovereign state; however, Japan allows a Palestinian representative to call himself ambassador.[3] Arab countries also accept Palestinian Representative Waleed Ali Siam as the Ambassador and the Dean of the Arab Diplomatic Corps in Japan.[4][5]
