Gadigal railway station

Gadigal railway station is an underground rapid transit station under construction located in the central business district (CBD) of Sydney, Australia. The station forms part of Transport for New South Wales's Sydney Metro City & Southwest scheme. It is scheduled to open in 2024.[2]

During planning and construction, the station was known as Pitt Street station. In 2021, the Geographical Names Board proposed naming the station after the Gadigal Aboriginal people whose traditional lands cover contemporary Sydney.[3] The name Gadigal was confirmed on 18 October 2023.[4]

Excavation and tunnelling on Gadigal station was completed in late 2020, with work moving on to station construction and fit-out.[2]

Design

The station is designed to relieve pressure on nearby Town Hall station in the southern CBD although it will not feature a direct interchange.[2][5] Gadigal station will serve the retail areas of George Street and Pitt Street, and will allow interchange with Sydney light rail on George street. The station has two entries on Park street and Bathurst street, with over-station developments planned above the stations.[6] A 39-level tower will sit above the southern entrance to Gadigal station.[5]

It is the shallowest station on the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, with platforms sitting 17 metres below street level.[5]

The station features large murals by Melbourne-based artist Callum Morton called The Underground.[5]
