McAndrew attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he played for coach Joe Arnold's Florida Gators baseball team from 1987 to 1989. In 1987, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League.[2] He was a member of the Gators' 1988 College World Series team, and was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection in 1989.
