Kheibar (missile)

The Kheibar (Persian: خیبر), also known as Khorramshahr-4,[1] is an Iranian liquid-fueled surface-to-surface medium range ballistic missile that was unveiled in May 2023 by Iran's Defense Minister. The missile is an upgraded version of Iran's Khoramshahr ballistic missile[2] with a range of 2,000 km able to carry 1,500-kilogram warhead.[3][4]

The Kheibar missile was unveiled by the Iran's Defense Minister Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani on Thursday, 25 May 2023 coinciding with the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr.[5]

Kheibar has a range of 2,000 kilometres and can carry a 1,500 kilogram warhead.[6]

Naming

The Khorramshahr-4 is named after an Iranian city that was the scene of heavy fighting known as Battle of Khorramshahr during the Iraq-Iran War in the 1980s.[7][8] The missile also is called Khaybar, after a fortress conquered by the Muslims in the 7th century during a Battle called Khaybar in Arabia.[7]
