MG4 EV

The MG4 EV is a battery electric small family car (C-segment) produced by the Chinese automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor under the British MG marque. First released in June 2022 as the MG Mulan in China (later renamed to MG4 EV in August 2023),[4] it is the first vehicle to be based on SAIC's battery-electric Modular Scalable Platform (marketed as the Nebula platform in China). It was introduced in Europe in July 2022.[5]

Overview

Developed under the codename EH32,[6] the car was designed as a global model with the European market set as the primary target.[7]

The MG4 EV is claimed to have a 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity of 490 mm (19.3 in) for superior handling. MG also engineered a thinner and flatter battery compared to typical battery electric vehicles with its "One Pack" battery system (called Rubik's Cube battery system in China). The battery is only 110 mm (4.3 in) thick for the smallest capacity, which reduces the height of the car. The "One Pack" battery is also designed to be swappable.

The Modular Scalable Platform technically enables 800-volt charging technology, which allows the car to achieve a range of 200 km (124 mi) after five minutes of charging and reach 80 percent level within 15 minutes. For models equipped with the regular 400-volt charging technology, five minutes of charging will be enough to reach 100 km (62 mi) of range and take 30 minutes for charging to 80 percent level.[8]

The MG4 EV is also marketed in Thailand as the MG4 Electric since November 2022.[9] The MG4 EV was revealed in Indonesia in February 2023 at the 30th Indonesia International Motor Show,[10] and launched on 14 June 2023.[11] The MG4 EV was also launched in the Philippines on October 6, 2023 alongside the Marvel R.

Naming conventions

The MG4 is currently marketed in the UK with the following editions:[12]

  • MG4 EV SE (51 kWh)
  • MG4 EV SE Long Range (64 kWh)
  • MG4 EV Trophy (64 kWh)
  • MG4 EV Extended Range (77 kWh)[13]
  • MG4 EV XPOWER (64 kWh)[14]

In the Republic of Ireland the MG4 EV is sold as:[15]

  • MG4 Excite Standard Range (51 kWh)
  • MG4 Excite Long Range (64 kWh)
  • MG4 Exclusive Long Range (64 kWh)

In other parts of the EU the available editions are named as:[16]

  • MG4 Electric Standard (51 kWh)
  • MG4 Electric Comfort (64 kWh)
  • MG4 Electric Luxury (64 kWh)
  • MG4 Electric Trophy Extended Range (77 kWh)
  • MG4 Electric XPOWER (64 kWh)

The main versions are similar in specification across each area but although minor differences do exist, the variants are generally based on a 51 kWh LFP battery, a 64 kWh long range battery and 77 kWh extended range battery (introduced in MY2023 only).

The XPOWER and rumoured 6R4 version(s) have been announced at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2023 [17] and any name changes are unknown as of July 2023.

XPower

A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, performance-oriented model of the MG4EV called XPOWER has been available since July 2023. It was marketed in China as the MG Mulan Triumph Edition.[18] Exterior changes compared to the standard MG4 include a 18-inch alloy wheels, orange-painted XPower brake calipers, trim accents, and a Racing Green exterior paint option. The powertrain combines dual electric motors, 150 kW (201 hp; 204 PS) at the front and 170 kW (228 hp; 231 PS) at the rear– for a combined output of 320 kW (429 hp; 435 PS) and 600 N⋅m (61.2 kg⋅m; 443 lb⋅ft) of torque. It is equipped with Dynamic Cornering Control System that combines an electronic locking differential with torque vectoring. MG claimed a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration figure in 3.8 seconds. It also uses a modified chassis setup, by using a 25 percent stiffer suspension with recalibrated spring and dampers and stiffer anti-roll-bars, sharper steering, larger 345 mm (13.6 in) disc brakes, and a stronger setting for the regenerative braking.[19]

Technical specifications

The MG 4 EV is a 5-door, 4-seater hatchback, with two combinations (Standard Range, Maximum Range).
