Political career
Esber was first elected to Parramatta Council in September 1999 representing Lachlan Macquarie Ward. Esber served continuously until May 2016 when Parramatta council was amalgamated and its existing wards were abolished. Esber was then re-elected to council representing Dundas Ward at the subsequent 2017 New South Wales local elections. He is currently the longest serving councillor on Parramatta Council, and the one of only two sitting councillors who also served pre-amalgamation.
In 2011 Esber was pre-selected as Labor's candidate to contest the seat of Parramatta at the NSW State Election. Parramatta was considered a very safe Labor seat with a 13.1% majority having been held by three Labor members consecutively since 1991. Esber was unsuccessful, suffering a 25.8% swing to Liberal candidate Geoff Lee, turning the very safe Labor seat into a safe Liberal one.
In 2023 Esber became Lord Mayor of Parramatta Council following a leadership spill which saw the then-Lord Mayor Sameer Pandey replaced. In the subsequent council vote, Esber prevailed 9 votes to 6.[1] The move was criticised as a "senseless act with no political outcome that is beneficial to the Labor Party".[1]
