Early life

Pandey was born in Jamshedpur, a north-eastern city in Jharkhand, India.[2] He emigrated to Australia in 1998 for his studies, and returned in 2003 as an IT specialist and engineer.[2]

Political career

Pandey was elected to Parramatta City Council in 2017 representing its Parramatta Ward with 1.2 quotas.[3] He was returned at the 2021 Local Government Elections with an increased quota of 1.65.[4] At this same election Labor secured a working majority and Pandey was elected Deputy Lord Mayor to then-Lord Mayor Donna Davis.

In 2023 Pandey was pre-selected in a rank-and-file ballot with 53% of the vote to contest the new seat of Winston Hills at the NSW State Election.[5] He was unsuccessful, though won 48.2% of the two-party preferred vote, representing a 3.9% swing to Labor.

Following the election of then-Lord Mayor Donna Davis to the NSW Legislative Assembly representing Parramatta she resigned from the Lord Mayorship effective 22 May.[6] An 'Extraordinary Meeting of Council' was held, and Pandey was elected 7 votes to 6.[5] He is the first Lord Mayor in Australian history to be born in India.[5]

On his first day as Lord Mayor, Pandey welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Parramatta for his rally at Qudos Bank Arena.[5]
