- 1916 – World War I: Bombardier Klintworth becomes the first Australian to be killed in France.
- 1942 – World War II: Japanese Imperial Headquarters debated whether to invade Australia, or not. It was decided to capture Port Moresby and the Solomons and then to isolate Australia by seizing Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia.
