Events

1836 – Louisa Railroad incorporated in Virginia.[1]
1868 – Manningham station opens on the Midland Railway north of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
1869 – Henry Keyes succeeds Henry C. Lord as president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
1871 – William J. Palmer announces that the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad will be built using 3 ft (914 mm) gauge tracks.[1]
1881 – The first train operates between Norwood, Ohio, and Lebanon, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Northern Railway.
1885 – The Southern Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad are combined under a single holding company, the Southern Pacific Company.

1929 – Central Railroad of New Jersey debuts the Blue Comet passenger train before its launch in regular service in New Jersey.
1950 – Rockville Centre, New York, United States: a head-on collision between two Long Island Rail Road commuter trains kills 32 and injures 158.[1]
1961 – Application for a merger between the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroads made to the ICC.[1]

2009 – The international connection between Perpignan, Roussillon, France, and Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, through the Perthus Tunnel on the Perpignan–Barcelona high-speed rail line is officially opened.[2]
