19th century

1803 – The Surrey Iron Railway, in the south of London, England, opens.
1881 – Construction crews on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad's Alpine Tunnel, in Colorado, break through to connect both ends of the tunnel.

20th century

1910 – The London and South Western Railway (pictured) introduces new Continental service, Southampton-Havre.
1988 – Israel's Knesset approves an amendment to the Ports Authority Law, merging Israel Railways into the Israel Port Authority, henceforth to be known as the Israel Ports and Railways Authority.

21st century

2002 – The German manufacturer of rail equipment, Vossloh, announces the acquisition of the French company Cogifer.
