Biography

She is a descendant of the Chinese royal family who came to Korea in the age of the Three Kingdoms of Korea.

One of her ancestors was Oh Cheom (Korean: 오첨; Hanja: 呉膺) who came to Korea in the year 500 during the reign of Jijeung of Silla. Oh Cheom is a 45th generation descendant of King Taebaek's 25th generation descendant Oh Gi (Jeseung of the Cho Dynasty).

Oh Cheom took the daughter of Kim Jong-ji (김종지, 金宗之) as his wife by the king's order, and lived in Silla for 22 years. During that time he had two sons and one daughter in Silla, but he decided to leave Silla to go back to China in 521. His younger son was too small to go back China with his father, so Oh Cheom left his younger son, Oh Eung (Korean: 오응; Hanja: 呉膺) in Silla who lived in Hamyang.

Oh Eung's descendant, the Queen's grandfather, lived in Hamyang but eventually moved to Naju, which at the time was called Geumseong, and was the place that the future Queen was born in. This was later followed by Oh Da-ryeon (Korean: 오다련; Hanja: 呉多憐) who helped King Taejo establish the Goryeo Dynasty.[2] Queen Janghwa is daughter of Oh Da-ryeon and it's said that Oh served Confucius (공자, 孔子), Myodang (묘당, 廟堂), and Gyeonghakbaksa (경학박사, 經學博士) in the year 877 during the reign of King Heongang.[3]
