History

Before the opening of Rock Hill High School, there was only one high school in Prosper ISD: Prosper High School. Due to the rapidly increasing number of students in Prosper ISD, the district began construction of a second high school in the summer of 2018.[2] The district spent over $200 million dollars on the construction of the school, the most ever spent on a high school in Texas at the time.[3] This school was named Rock Hill High School, and the school opened in the 2020-2021 school year.

The southern and eastern parts of Prosper ISD's school zone were designated to Rock Hill's new attendance zone. Students already attending Prosper High School who lived in the Rock Hill school zone had the choice of staying at Prosper High School or transferring to the new Rock Hill High School. Rising seniors and juniors set to attend either school were given the opportunity to choose which school to attend. Because the school opened during the coronavirus pandemic, students also had the option of either attending school in person or taking lessons virtually. This was exclusive to the 2020-2021 school year.

Rock Hill opened as a UIL Class 5A school but was reclassified as a 6A school starting from the 2022-2023 school year. It is one of the smallest 6A schools in the state in terms of enrollment.[4]

With Walnut Grove's confirmed opening, some Rock Hill students were rezoned for Walnut Grove. Rising seniors were given the option to continue attending Rock Hill, even if they lived within Walnut Grove's attendance boundaries. Rising freshmen, sophomores, and juniors were not given this option.[5] In the 2022-23 school year, Rock Hill's first principal, Dustin Toth, stepped down from his position in order to become the first principal at Walnut Grove instead. Assistant principal Terry Mouton replaced Toth as Rock Hill's principal.[6]

Controversy

Rock Hill High School is located on Coit Road, which is one of the most congested and busiest roads in the entire state.[7] Many students must cross this road when getting to and leaving the school. During regular school zone hours, there are crossing guards who protect students from accidents. Outside of school zone hours, especially in the evening where student athletes and marching band members need to go out of school, there are no guards, and cars travel at no reduced speeds. In late 2022, a student was crossing the road late at night after practice and was hit by a car in a hit and run.[8] Although the student was not seriously injured, this raised some concerns among the students and the board members about the safety of the roads.[9]

Athletics

As of 2022, Rock Hill High School is a part of 6A Region 1 District 5. Other schools in this district are Allen High School, Denton Braswell High School, Denton Guyer High School, Little Elm High School, McKinney High School, McKinney Boyd High School and Prosper High School.
