Until World War II it had a sizeable Jewish community, which numbered 1198 in 1900. It had been the center of the Hasidic Savran dynasty.
Until 18 July 2020, Savran was the administrative center of Savran Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Odesa Oblast to seven. The area of Savran Raion was merged into Podilsk Raion.[3][4]
