Sexyy Red

Janae Nierah Wherry (born April 15, 1998), known professionally as Sexyy Red, is an American rapper. She first received online attention in 2018, after reworking Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" on her track "Ah Thousand Jugs".[3] In 2022, she collaborated with Summer Walker on the controversial music video "Sense Dat God Gave You".[4] She rose to further prominence with her breakthrough single "Pound Town" (with Tay Keith) in January 2023, which later spawned a remix with Nicki Minaj titled "Pound Town 2", and became her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. A follow-up single, "SkeeYee", saw similar success as both songs were included on her second mixtape Hood Hottest Princess (2023).

During the same year, Wherry appeared on official remixes of "Shake Sumn" by DaBaby,[5] "Slut Me Out" by NLE Choppa,[6] and "Peaches & Eggplants" by Young Nudy, alongside rapper Latto.[7] She was featured on Drake's single "Rich Baby Daddy" alongside SZA, which reached number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Billboard declared her as "one of the biggest breakout artists of summer 2023".[8] She received a nomination for "Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist" at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards. Her public image, lyrics, and media presence have been described as brazenly sexual, boisterous, or "confident".[9]

Early life

Wherry grew up in St. Louis County, Missouri. She started rapping when her boyfriend cheated on her and she decided to write a diss song about it. The stage name "Sexyy Red" was adapted from others giving her the nickname "Red" due to her red dyed hair, and her aim for sex appeal since embarking on a recording career. The extra "y" was added to differentiate from an Instagram personality of a homophonous name.[10]

Wherry released her first song "Ah Thousand Jugs" in 2018. In 2021, she released her debut mixtape Ghetto Superstar.[11]

In January 2023, she released "Pound Town" with Tay Keith, which later went viral on social media because of its sexuality.[12] In April, she was featured on the remix of NLE Choppa's "Slut Me Out".[13] In May, she released "Pound Town 2" with Nicki Minaj, which became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. In June, she released the mixtape Hood Hottest Princess.[14] In August 2023, Wherry officially joined Drake on his It's All a Blur Tour as an opening act, having appeared as a guest at previous shows.[15] In October, she collaborated with Drake and SZA on "Rich Baby Daddy" off of Drake's album For All the Dogs.

Artistry

Wherry has stated that she is inspired by male rappers such as Project Pat, Juicy J, and Gucci Mane. She describes her music as "bad" and "ratchet".[10]

Personal life

Wherry has a son.[10]

In August 2023, Wherry disclosed on a podcast that she was a victim of rape.[16]

In October 2023, during a podcast with Theo Von, Wherry expressed affinity for former U.S. president Donald Trump, sentiments which became categorized as an endorsement for his 2024 campaign for re-election.[17] The same month, a video with Wherry having sex with an unidentified male—described as a "local Atlanta rapper"—was posted to her Instagram Story. Wherry alleged that her account was hacked and has adamantly denied posting the video.[18]
