Background
In a segment with The Morning Show Mya discussed in-depth about "Space and Time," a song which speaks about granting yourself permission to unplug from the world and to practise a little self-care.[1] The singer explained, "A lot of people have been facing depression and the rate has actually increased worldwide."[1] She continues to expound on the song and its message commenting, "A lot of fear has been instilled, so I thought this was the best time to refocus and also reassess the important things in life."[1] While lastly in conclusion she shared, "Spend time with yourself and also loved ones, and get back to unplugging from the world - breathing and practising that self-love to heal."[1] Similarly, Mya touched on "Space and Time" in an interview with British GQ, briefly speaking about the premise of "Space and Time." She remarked, "This song is all about providing healing vibes, but also with a statement of allowing yourself permission to act upon self care."[2]
Composition
A Louis York production, "Space and Time," was a collaborative effort between Chuck Harmony, Claude Kelly and Mya and recorded at The Village studio in Santa Monica, California.[3] Claude Kelly and Mya wrote the song's lyrics while Chuck Harmony created the melody and handled the song's overall production.[3] Together the trio developed the song's arrangement.[3] Dustin Richardson, an associate demoed "Space and Time" as a reference track for the singer.[3] The finalized version of "Space and Time" was mixed at Platinum Door studio in Los Angeles, California.[3] Additional contribution was provided by Billy Centenaro and Jack Zrehigian.[3] The former was responsible for engineering while the latter mastered "Space and Time" at Oasis Mastering in Burbank, California.[3]
With a common runtime of three minutes and fifty-six seconds, "Space and Time," is an inspirational easy-flowing composition emphasizing the importance of self-care[4] and filled with refreshing and uplifting messages for anyone ready to change their mindset and embrace their new destiny.[5] "Remember this, life turns and twists / Don’t ever quit / Be proud of whoever you are / Kill all the noise and every negative voice / It’s your mind, your choice / Yes you’re a bright star," the singer affirms on the second verse.[5]
Sonically, the guitar driven song evokes the lighthearted and happy feelings of her earlier material like "Fallen" but with a modern twist. Vocally, the singer's angelic tone elevates the track to new heights as she layers it throughout the chorus as the song progresses with lyrics like: "You’re gonna feel much better/When you can heal much better/You’re deal gonna much better/If you take some space and time."[4]
Music video
The music video for "Space and Time" was directed in collaboration between Kirk Fraser and May 3rd Films.[6] While Mya served as producer, editor, and creative director.[6] Shot during the lockdown, "Space and Time," a carefree video with beautifully lush green trees and grass served as the background for the singer's countryside oasis.[6] The singer enjoys her peace of mind as she wanders around the great outdoors.[6] As well as partakes in some alone time as she flexes on the acoustic guitar.[6]
