Biography

Early life

Maekawa was born in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from the University of Washington in 1990 with a degree in architecture, where he encountered friars of the Order of Preachers for the first time.[2] In September of 1991, he entered the Province of the Holy Name of Jesus of the Dominican Order, which covers the western United States. In 1998 he received a Master of Divinity from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, and was ordained in May of the same year at St. Augustine Church in Oakland, California by Bishop John Cummins.[3][4]

Priesthood

Maekawa's first assignment as a priest was at St. Dominic Church in San Francisco, California. He then served as director of the Newman Center at the University of Washington and Prior of St. Dominic Priory.[3]

Maekawa also served as a military chaplain with the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy, serving in Afghanistan in 2004 and being awarded a medal for his active duty service.[5]

Upon his return to the United States, Maekawa was the vocations director for the Western Province of the Dominicans before becoming pastor of Holy Family Old Cathedral in 2016, which became known for its traditional liturgies and use of Gregorian chant, as well as its celebration of the Dominican Rite of the Mass.[5]

Bishop of Fairbanks

Pope Francis appointed Maekawa bishop for the Diocese of Fairbanks on July 11, 2023.[6][7] He was consecrated a bishop and installed on October 12, 2023.
