List of tallest buildings in Charlotte
Charlotte, the largest city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, is the site of 60 completed high-rises over 200 feet (61 m), 8 of which stand taller than 500 feet (152 m).[1][2][3] The tallest building in the city is the Bank of America Corporate Center, which rises 871 feet (265 m) in Uptown Charlotte and was completed in 1992. It also stands as the tallest building in North Carolina and the 57th-tallest building in the United States.[4][5] The second-tallest skyscraper in the city is the 550 South Tryon formerly Duke Energy Center, which rises 786 feet (240 m) and was completed in 2010.[6] The Truist Center, completed in 2002 and rising 659 feet (201 m), is the third-tallest building in Charlotte.[7] Nine of the ten tallest buildings in North Carolina are located in Charlotte.[8]
The history of skyscrapers in the city began with the construction of the Independence Building in 1909. This building, rising 186 feet (57 m) and 14 floors,[9] is often regarded as the first skyscraper in Charlotte;[10] despite having been added to the Registered Historic Place in 1978, it was demolished in 1981 to allow for the construction of One Independence Center.[9] Charlotte's first building standing more than 492 feet (150 m) tall was the One South at The Plaza, completed in 1974.[11] The project Queensbridge Collective which is composed of two buildings will be the first buildings outside of Uptown to rise above 492 feet (150 m).[12][4][6][7][13][14][15][16] The residential tower broke ground May 24, 2023.[17] The office tower is expected to break ground at earliest July 2023. The exact date will depend upon market conditions for office buildings.[18] There are currently nine buildings under construction that are planned to rise at least 200 feet (61 m) or at least 15 floors.[19][20][21][22][23][24] Overall, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat ranks Charlotte's skyline (based on existing and under construction buildings over 492 feet (150 m) tall) 4th in the Southeastern United States (after Miami, Atlanta and Sunny Isles Beach), 6th in the Southern United States (after Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Sunny Isles Beach), and 19th in the United States.[25][lower-alpha 1]

Southern Land Company Mixed Use Tower | 336 (102.4) | 30[208] | 2025 | Mixed use tower use with 300 luxury apartments that will be built on the current site of Tyber Creek Pub. It is being developed by Southern Land Company on an acre lot at the corner of Tremont Ave and South Blvd which combines lots 1919, 1923 and 1933 South Blvd. Construction will begin by July 2023 and complete in 2025.[210][211] In March and April 2023 Southern Land Company applied with Mecklenburg County for building, footing, and foundation permits.[212] The historic building at 1923 South Blvd., which is part of the land purchased by Southern Land Company, will be relocated to 1829 Cleveland Ave. Site construction is expected to start before the end of 2023. VeLa Uptown | 368 (112.1) | 32[215] | 2025 | 379 luxury apartments which are being developed at 200 E. Seventh St., former site of the Levine Museum of the New South. The .7 acre site at the corner of East Seventh and North College was purchased on March 13, 2022 for $10.75 million. It will also include 4,000 square feet (370 m2) of retail and 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) of resident amenity space. The project cost is $170 million. Construction will begin in the first half of 2023 and complete in the fourth quarter of 2025.[215] |
526 S. Church St | 358 (109.1) | 27[216] | 2025 | Former Duke Energy headquarters that sits on a 3.86-acre lot. MRP Realty announced its intent to purchase the building in May 2022. The current 800,000 square feet (74,000 m2) building will be preserved. The plan is to add 75,000 square feet (7,000 m2) of retail space, 1,000 apartments,[217][216] and 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2) of office space. 550 apartments will be built in a 14-story addition sitting on top of the existing building.[217][216] and 450 apartments will be added by converting the current office space.[216] The redevelopment will be building 1,500,000 square feet (140,000 m2) of space and the project will cost $280 million.[216][218] Duke Energy sold the site on December 16, 2022, to MRP for $35 million.[216] Construction will start in early 2024 after Duke Energy moves out to occupy Duke Energy Plaza. It is currently occupied by businesses Modern Man, Savvy Seconds Consignment, Fresh Nails, Lucky Fish and Destined To Make It.[232] It willl break ground in 2024.[233] |
Phillips Place Office Tower | 250 (76.2)[234] | 10[235] | Mixed used building with 250,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of ground retail that will be developed by Lincoln Harris. It will be built on the 3.65 acre site that the Regal Phillips Place once occupied.[236] The movie theater's lease ran until the end of 2025. Therefore, construction of the new tower was not planned to begin until after the theater's lease expires.[237][238] If built it will be the tallest building in South Park.[239] The Regal Phillips Place closed on October 16, 2022.[240] The building was demolished in March 2023.
