It opened as an academy in 2014 and is part of South Bank Academies (sponsored by London South Bank University). It was re-founded as South Bank University Academy in 2021. The school is no longer specialist in engineering, but has a values-led approach to delivering a broad and balanced curriculum to its learners.

South Bank University Academy has a focus on supporting social and cultural capital development. It does this through some innovative initiatives which include Day 10. Day 10 is a programme where students embark on a range of enriching activities, often with employers, universities or community groups, to build knowledge and skills. A recent example included the Solutions for a Better World project, and a Lego robotics project with LSBU and Thales.

The school is part of the London South Bank University Group, set up to support student pathways through the education system to high quality destinations. The LSBU Group also includes its sister school, South Bank UTC, as well as London South Bank Technical College and Lambeth College.

A 2017 Ofsted report rated the school as "Good", with the school again rated "Good" in June 2022.[2]

The school enrols 751 students, which 70.9% are boys, 29.1% are girls .[3]
