Vatican City at the 2022 Mediterranean Games

Vatican City was unofficially[1] represented at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria from 25 June to 6 July 2022.[2] Its appearance at these games marked its debut. It was the first country to participate in any international multi-sport event without a National Olympic Committee or National Paralympic Committee.[1]

Background

Before the country's participation, a Vatican delegation was present at the 2019 Games of the Small States of Europe in Montenegro, but was only allowed to observe. They were scheduled to officially compete at the 2021 Games of the Small States of Europe through a partnership with the Italian Olympic Committee,[3] but the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to avoid scheduling conflicts with the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.[4] The Vatican was present at the 2022 Championships of the Small States of Europe. The team received a "non-scoring" manner despite one of its competitors finishing third in the women's 5000 m run.[5]

Sara Carnicelli was eligible to represent the nation because her mother worked at the Vatican.[1]

Athletics

Vatican City got invited by local organizers to send Carnicelli, who participated in the women's half marathon.[1] She would have finished 9th, but was scored in a "non-scoring" way, and did not appear in the ranks.[6]
