Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (transl. This is love) is an Indian romantic drama TV series that aired from December 3, 2013 to December 18, 2019 on Star Plus. Produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms, it starred Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel as Ishita Iyer and Raman Bhalla. The story was initially based on Manju Kapur's 2011 novel Custody, with Yeh Hai Mohabbatein continuing beyond Custody's story in later episodes.

The story follows Punjabi CEO Raman Kumar Bhalla and his next-door neighbour, Dr. Ishita Iyer, a pediatric dentist who adores children but cannot conceive due to a medical issue. Raman and Ishita clash due to their inflated egos. Raman's troubled past has made him lose faith in love and relationships, whereas Ishita maintains an optimistic outlook on life. Both hold firm convictions and are reluctant to compromise easily. Despite their opposing temperaments, they begin to fall in love as Raman's perception of the world gradually transforms through Ishita, and Ishita begins to glimpse the real Raman. They bond over a shared love of Raman's child, Ruhi.

Plot

Set in Delhi, the show revolves around two neighbours, Tamil dentist Dr. Ishita Iyer and Punjabi CEO Raman Kumar Bhalla; neighbours who got off on the wrong foot and dislike each other, but are brought together by destiny and their mutual love for Ruhi, Raman's daughter from his ex-wife Shagun.

After his partner leaves him for a richer man, Raman loses trust in relationships and love. Raman's son, Aditya, is manipulated by Shagun's new partner Ashok to be against Raman. This makes it difficult for Raman to establish a relationship with Aditya. Raman also finds it hard to connect with his daughter, Ruhi, who was only six months old when Shagun left him.

Ishita loves children, but cannot conceive due to a defect in her fallopian tubes. Upon meeting Ruhi, the two develop a deep connection, but Raman and Ishita hate each other due to several misunderstandings. Despite this, they decide to get married for Ruhi's sake. Raman marries Ishita to obtain Ruhi's custody, while Ishita marries him to give Ruhi the motherly love she was deprived of.

After marrying each other, Raman and Ishita realize how wrong their misconceptions about each other were. Their misunderstandings slowly fade away and they become friends. Ishita supports Raman in moving on from his past and brings him closer to Ruhi. Raman supports Ishita against his entire family when she is framed by Raman's brother-in-law, Parmeet Khurana, and proves her innocence. He also sacrifices his prestigious position as the "New Delhi Entrepreneurs Association" President in order to recover Ishita's dental license that was unfairly revoked by Ashok and his brother, Sooraj. When Ishita learns of Raman's sacrifice from Romi, she plots against Ashok and Suraj. Eventually, she successfully gets Raman reinstated Raman as president with the help of Romi, Mihir and Sarika.

Raman supports Ishita's family when in need and through this, wins her heart. Initially, Aditya is against Raman and Ishita's relationship and hates Ishita due to constant provoking by Shagun. Still, he realizes Ishita's humble nature and kindness and accepts her as his mother when she risks her life to save him and Ruhi from a fire.

Ishita finally becomes pregnant but miscarries due to a conspiracy by Ashok, leading Shagun to realize that Ashok is doing wrong. Shagun decides to help Raman and Ishita, and becomes a surrogate mother for their child.

Later, Ishita is accused of murder when in reality it was an act of self-defence. Nidhi Chabra, a renowned lawyer, takes Ishita's case. However, it is then revealed that Nidhi is plotting against her as she loves Raman and wants to marry him. Raman learns of this conspiracy and exposes Nidhi's deception. In the meantime, Shagun gives birth to Raman and Ishita's daughter, Pihu.

Nidhi swears revenge, and kidnaps Pihu. She tells Raman that she will let them go in exchange for Ruhi, while Raman devises a plan to save both of his daughters. While executing the plan, Ishita manages to save Pihu but in the process, Nidhi escapes, taking Ruhi with her. While escaping, Nidhi and Ruhi are involved in an car accident and are presumed dead. Raman blames Ishita for all this and asks her to leave. Ishita, dejected at the turn of events, attempts suicide by jumping off a cliff and is presumed dead.

7 Years Later

Ishita is alive thanks to the actions of her childhood friend Mani, and is and staying in Australia with Mani and his adoptive daughter, Alia. Ishita still loves Raman and Ruhi and regrets her actions. Raman, believing Ishita to be dead, becomes an alcoholic and blames himself for Ishita's suicide. Pihu, who resembles Ruhi, thinks that Shagun is her mother and that Shagun and Raman are married when they are not and are just pretending. Romi, estranged from Bhallas, now works with Ashok and is engaged to Mihika. The animosity between Iyers and Bhallas increased during this period, and they now despise each other. Ruhi and Nidhi are also revealed to be alive, with Nidhi turning Ruhi into Ruhaan, a popular singer in Australia. Ruhi hates Ishita due to manipuation by Nidhi. Alia is employed as Ruhaan's secretary.

By chance, Ishita and Raman meet after seven years in jail, when an adult Aditya is accused of assaulting Alia, but is later proven innocent. Eventually, everyone learns that Ishita is alive, but Raman still despises her. Ishita's parents are also angry and despise her for feigning her death, but eventually reconcile with her. Raman and Ishita decide to marry Shagun and Mani respectively, but on the day of Raman and Shagun's marriage, everyone realizes that Ruhi is Ruhaan and the marriages are cancelled. For Ruhi's benefit, Raman and Ishita start living together and try to sort out their differences. They eventually reconcile and reunite with each other after seven years of separation. Both of their families also reunite peacefully and eventually Nidhi is arrested. Ruhi also forgives Ishita and Raman and reunites with her family.

Shagun, who now loves Raman, envies Ishita and again starts plotting against her by trying to kill her, and when this fails, tries to turn Pihu against her. Shagun then marries Mani and manipulates him against Ishita and Raman. She also manages to gain the sole custody of Pihu. In the meantime, Aditya and Alia fall in love with each other, but face opposition from Mani and Raman. Ishita, with the help of Alia's grandmother, Shobhana, manages to sort out the issues and Aditya and Alia become engaged. Raman and Ishita remarry and renew their vows happily, but their happiness is short-lived as Pihu learns that Ishita is her biological mother. Pihu refuses to accept her, and moves with Shagun and Mani to Bangkok. Raman blames Ishita for all this and moves to Bangkok to be with Pihu.

Development and premiere

Kapoor said, "I created Divyanka's character as a dentist in 'Yeh Hai Mohabbatein', as I was having a lot of tooth trouble those days. My dentist sorted my problems a lot, so I brought that character alive"[4]

The show was initially titled Custody as it was based on Manju Kapur's 2011 novel Custody.[5] It was renamed to Mera Tera Rishta Purana before again being changed to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.[6] The production began about a year before its premiere, but the launch was delayed due to creative differences and desired time slots being unavailable.[7][8][9]

In November 2019, Ekta Kapoor revealed, "When I started Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, I remember going to Gaurav Banerjee from Star Plus and asking him for a non prime time slot because I wanted to do a show on a social issue. I had stopped doing much television and I wanted to make YHM without the trappings of a TRP driven show. A show about a woman who cannot have children, a stepmother who according to Indian terms is considered bad! Words in India like barren and evil stepmother got used so often and labelled women in the worst poss way. This show got so much love that it went on for six years. And from a non prime time slot to a prime time slot."[10]

In September 2014, Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor were to promote their film Finding Fanny, which also starred the Yeh Hai Mohabbatein leads Tripathi Dahiya and Patel.[11] Patel was unable to make the shooting, and so the script was changed in his absence at the last minute, as Deepika and Arjun could not reschedule.[12]

On 11 May 2016, during filming of the wedding sequence of characters Romi and Mihika, the shoot was stalled owing to a fight between the production house and workers union.[13] On 25 July 2018, the shoot was stalled for a while during bandh in Mumbai.[14]

Casting

Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya was selected by Kapoor to play Ishita Iyer Bhalla.[15] Cezanne Khan was first approached to play Raman Bhalla opposite Tripathi Dahiya, but was replaced by Karan Patel.[16] Child actor Ruhanika Dhawan was chosen to play Ruhi Bhalla.[17] Sayantani Ghosh was initially considered but Anita Hassanandani was selected to play Shagun Arora.[18] Other cast members then chosen were Aly Goni, Mihika Verma, Shruti Bapna, Neena Kulkarni, Shahnaz Rizwan, Kaushal Kapoor, Abhay Bhargava and Gautam Ahuja.[19][20]

In March 2018, Charu Mehra was supposed to join the series during the filming in London, however, she was unable to due to visa issues.[21]

Based on the backdrop of Delhi, the series is mainly filmed in Andheri, Mumbai.[22][23] Some sequences were filmed abroad, including in Adelaide, Budapest and London.[24][25]

Spin-off
Main article: Yeh Hai Chahatein

Yeh Hai Chahatein premiered on 19 December 2019, replacing Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. It focuses on Ishita's niece Preesha Khurana (Sargun Kaur Luthra) opposite Abrar Qazi as Rudraksh Khurana.[26]

The story revolves around a famous rockstar, Rudraksh Khurana, and a gynaecologist, Dr Preesha Srinivasan who fall in love after raising their respective siblings' son together.

Despite first airing in the late night slot 11:00pm (IST), Yeh Hai Mohabbatein received better ratings than expected and ranked as the fourth most popular show on Star Plus.[40] In 2014, on audience request, it was moved to a dual slot of 7:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. (IST). Star Plus SVP marketing Nikhil Madhok stated that the move was made after audiences' feedback that a section of viewers found the 11:00 p.m. slot too late. He further explained, "This was a show where repeat viewing the next day or viewing on online digital medium is very high. So the dual airing will not only help the existing viewers who love the show to watch it twice but also add a whole new set of viewers".[40]

Starting in January 2017, the show fell in the TRP ratings when the show's focus shifted to the new generation.[41] The show remained popular in the UK, being the most-watched Indian show there.[42][43] The climax of the arc involving Ruhi and Nikhil, leading to Ananya's death, brought a sudden spike in the ratings in the first week of November 2017 (week 44) and the series secured a place amongst the Top 10 shows after almost a year off this ranking.[44] With the Budapest arc and the focus back on the main leads, the show reached the Top 5 in the second week of November 2017 (week 45).[45][46] In week 46 of the year 2017, the show further climbed to the fourth spot on the TRP chart, thus becoming the most-watched show on StarPlus.[47] In week 47 of the year 2017, the show remained at No. 4 on the TRP charts and continued to be the most-watched show on StarPlus. The show continued to do well maintaining its No. 1 position on StarPlus in the following weeks. In week 51 of 2017, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein emerged as the most-watched show across all Hindi GECs. In week 8 of the year 2018, the show remained at No. 3 on the TRP charts and continued to be the most-watched show on STAR Plus.[49] In May 2018, the show was shifted to 10:30 p.m. from 7:30 p.m. which led to a fall in TRPs. Roshni's baby arc was received poorly by fans, which led to a further downfall in TRPs. StarPlus intervened, asking the producer, Ekta Kapoor, to change the storyline of the show while also giving it a 6-month deadline to increase the ratings. Ishita's fake death drama to expose Param led to the show re-entering the top 20 shows in week 31 of the year 2018 occupying 18th place with 3889 million viewership.[50] After the change in show timings to late night TRPs have dropped ranging from 1.2 to 1.4 mostly but had been the slot leader since then. After being unable to pull up the TRP and lack of constructive story, the show went off air on 18 December 2019, giving space to the Yeh Hai Mohabbatein spin-off called Yeh Hai Chahatein.
