Name

Calophylleae Choisy in DC., Prodr. 1: 561. (1824)

Synonyms

  • Heterotypic
    • Caraipeae Engl., Fl. Bras. (C.F.P. von Martius) 12(1): 391. (1888.)
    • Mesuaceae Bercht. & J.Presl, Přir. Rostlin: 218. (1820)

Note: There is a dispute about the circumscriptions of Kayea and Mesua. Traditionally, combinations under Kayea were synonymised with equivalents in Mesea, where these are available. However, this has become difficult to sustain phylogenetically and morphologically and now many workers now propose that Mesua becomes monotypic consisting of only the type species, Mesua ferrea. The rest of the combinations, where described, are now species of Kayea - see additional references below and Stevens (2021). This circumscription has become increasingly common in local flora, but not in secondary sources, such as Kew Science Plants of the World online and World Plants: Synonymic Checklists of the Vascular Plants of the World.
