Type locality: Paraná State, boundary between municipalities of Cambira and Apucarana, ribeirão Cambira, affluent of rio Ivaí, upper rio Pananá basin, 23°38'54"S, 51°29"58"W., Brazil.

Etymology: The specific epithet oliveirai is a patronym honoring professor Claudio Oliveira from the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), Botucatu, São Paulo State, in recognition of his dedication and contributions to the studies of Neotropical freshwater fishes.
