Cyphelium brunneum W.A. Weber, 1967
Diagnosis: Thallus epilithicus, effusus, verrucoso-areolatus, usque ad 5 cm in diametro, verrucis hemisphaericis vel conoideis, usque ad 1.5 mm in diametro et 1.56 mm crassis, cervinis vel fusco-brunneis, subnitidis, KOH+ sanguineis, C et PD immutatis. Pseudocortex 30-60µ crassus, prosenchymatosus, hyphis crassis cum luminibus angustis. Algae virides, globosae, 10-18µ in diametro. Mazaedia 1-3 in areolis thalli, nigra, nuda, 0.5-0.7 mm in diametro, immersa vel subimmersa, plana vel convexiuscula. Excipulum nigrum bene evolutum et infra hymenium et ad latera hymenii. Sporae fuscae, 11-16 x 7-10µ, biloculares, ad septum ± constrictae, episporio parum pustulato, 1µ crasso.
Type locality: CALIFORNIA. Los Angeles Co., Santa Catalina Isl., ridges, N side of the island above the stone quarry, SW of Empire Landing, 500-700 ft. elev., Weber & Santesson 42724 (Colo-- holotype; B, BM, Duke, FH, G, UC, UPS, US -- isotypes). MEXICO. Baja California Norte: Punta Banda, SW of Ensenada, Weber & Santesson 43056 (Colo)
Substrate and ecology: On rock.
Etymology: The species epithet, brunneum refers to the brown color of the thallus.
