Type locality: Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, rio Dourados at Linha Várzea, on road from Severiano de Almeida to Aratiba, approx. 27°23’S, 52°13’W.

Etymology: From the Greek lipos, meaning fat, and from the Greek kara, meaning head, in allusion to the extremely large adipose hump of adult males.
