Etymology: The name comes from Greek Мῆτις (Metis), a Titaness in ancient Greek mythology, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, first wife of Zeus.

Description

Filaments arranged into fascicles, rarely solitary, unbranched. Filaments forming compact colony (thallus), attached to the substratum, purple to reddish. Sheaths thin, colorless and slightly to rarely distinct. Trichomes straight to curved or wavy, 0.57 – 1.76 μm wide, clearly constricted at the cross walls. Cells longer than wide, with peripheral thylakoids. Apical cells rounded (with/without calyptra?).
