Note: Hassler (2022) circumscribes the above species as ambiguous synonyms of Sphenostemon papuanus, excepting Nouhuysia novoguineensis (Gibbs) Steenis & Hatus., Bot. Mag. (Tokyo) 65: 109 (1952), which he does not include in his treatment. However, Steenis (1984) includes all three species in his synonymy of Sphenostemon papuanus. WS follows Govaerts et al. (2022) and adopts a conservative approach and therefore this taxon page has to remain pending further work. The genus has not been included in any of the analyses of the accepted tribes and so is incertae sedis with respect to tribes.
