Etymology

From Middle French and Old French escume (froth, foam), from a blend of Latin spūma and Frankish *skūm (froth, foam), from Proto-Germanic *skūmaz (foam), from Proto-Indo-European *skew- (to cover, conceal). Cognate with Old High German scūm (froth, foam), Middle Dutch schūme (foam), Old Norse skum (lather). Cf. also Catalan and Galician escuma. More at scum.
