Etymology
From Middle French and Old French escume (“froth, foam”), from a blend of Latin spūma and Frankish *skūm (“froth, foam”), from Proto-Germanic *skūmaz (“foam”), from Proto-Indo-European *skew- (“to cover, conceal”). Cognate with Old High German scūm (“froth, foam”), Middle Dutch schūme (“foam”), Old Norse skum (“lather”). Cf. also Catalan and Galician escuma. More at scum.
