From Proto-Germanic *þeubaz. Cognate with Old Frisian thiaf, Old Saxon thiof, Dutch dief, Old High German diob (German Dieb), Old Norse þjófr (Danish tyv, Swedish tjuv), Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐍆𐍃 (þiufs). Non-Germanic cognates include Albanian cub (“bandit, adventurer”).
