Initial meaning ‘maid, stepdaughter’, feminine of Byzantine Greek κόπελος (kópelos, “servant, stepson”), from South Slavic *kopylŭ ‘shoot, sprout; bastard’ (compare Serbo-Croatian копиле (kȍpile), Bulgarian копеле (kópele)).
