μυρίκη

Ancient Greek

Etymology

The suffix "-ίκη" is found also in ἑλίκη (helíkē) and ἀδίκη (adíkē), leading to a possible Pre-Greek origin. However, Lewy suggests a Semitic origin, connecting the word to Arabic مُرّ (murr, bitter) and Hebrew מֹר (mor, bitterness, acrimony).
