From Proto-Hellenic *pʰégʷomai, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰégʷeti, from *bʰegʷ-. Cognates include Lithuanian bė́gti, Proto-Slavic *běgati (“to flee, run”), and perhaps Tocharian A pkänt.
