From Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH- (“to appear, become, rise up”). Cognates include Old Armenian բոյս (boys, “plant”), Sanskrit भवति (bhavati), Avestan 𐬠𐬎 (bu), Latin fuī (“I was”), Old English bēon (English be), and Albanian bëj.
